This Week I attended a Bristol and Bath Marketing Network event calld "Has the cookie crumbled?" focussed on the new EU privacy laws concerning the way that websites obtain permission to use cookies.
You can find out more about the legislation itself by visiting the
Information Commissioners Office website
The speaker was Andrew Tibber, Senior Asscoiate at law firm Burgess Salmon, who gave an informative and at times entertaining presentation and the Q and A session revealed that local marketers have mixed feelings about the legislation (including resentment, casual disdain, amusement, anxiety and denial).
I took away several things from this session:
The legislation isn't just coming, it's here. And neither the EU or the ICO is going to have a sudden change of heart.
There isn't going to be a spoon-fed browser based solution and we all need to take responsibilty and take action to ensure we are compliant.
It's really not that big a deal and doesn't need to cost the earth or mess up our websites.
You can view the slides from Andrew Tibber's excellent presentation below and if you need some friendly advice on making your site compliant, do give our
web development team a call.
