The lowdown on Windows 7

04/09/2009
There has been much interest and build-up surrounding the forthcoming release of Windows 7, Microsoft’s new operating system. So what do businesses really need to know? Is the hype justified?  How will it benefit businesses and how can businesses get hold of it?

What is it, when is it released?

Windows 7 is the latest release of the world's most popular operating system will be officially available to the public on 22 October 2009.

What are the key features?
Microsoft states that Windows 7 has been built following feedback of the current operating system Vista; which received some negative press due mainly to its slow speed on older PCs. Microsoft promise a major usability improvement with Windows 7.

Windows 7 has been designed to make PCs start, shut down, resume from standby, and respond faster. There is a marked improvement of the expanded search facility which allows users to find documents, files and programs quickly and easily.

There are new features that reduce the number of steps required to do common tasks. For example, the Windows Taskbar simplifies working with your applications and files. Jump Lists creates shortcuts to the documents you access frequently and documents you’ve used recently via an accessible menu. The Snap feature, allows you to easily compare two documents by dragging the windows to the edges of the screen, automatically filling half the screen. These features make day to day use easier with fewer interruptions thereby improving user experience

Windows 7 delivers increased security for computers and data. Both internal hard disks and external devices can be encrypted with Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption and BitLocker to Go. These security features assist the securing of sensitive data on lost laptops or USB drives as mobile working continues to increase.  IT providers and managers can also use AppLocker to state which applications can run on user PCs, preventing employees installing unauthorised or malicious software.

Upgrading to Windows 7
If you are running genuine Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 on your PC then you qualify for Windows 7 upgrade versions. Once it is released you can move any PCs purchased today to Windows 7 Enterprise whenever you are ready. Microsoft Software Assurance enables you to secure the rights to Windows 7 Enterprise edition, providing significant cost savings in terms of upgrading to the new operating system when it arrives.

The verdict
We’re impressed. Windows 7 is functional, fast and delivers high performance. There are several changes to previous Windows operating systems which combine to make an extremely intuitive working environment.
